The pose post
Poses are the forgotten facet of many SL blog posts. We rave about the hair/the skin/the skirt/the jacket, but it’s rare for the humble posemaker to get a shout out. Let’s redress that, shall we?

Long a darling of the fashion set for her runway AO, Torrid Midnight’s animations and poses are elegant and realistic, but always mindful of the limitations the mesh places on our avatars. Quiet for spell, Torrid’s recent releases of the Vain and Benchwarmer Pose sets have seen her make a welcome return to the animation scene.
TorridWear poses are well suited to fashion photo shoots (where the idea is to actually show off the clothes, rather than veil them in mist so you can just barely make out a boob and a sock) – there’s a bit of ‘tude and a bit more ‘broken down doll’ and the rest is made up of class acts.
Costs around L$100 for individual poses and up to L$1000 for fatpacks.
As I mentioned in my last post, I have an enduring love for Dove Swanson poses. I am working towards owning the her entire inventory – I don’t own it all already, not because the poses are expensive, but because I hate uploading anything to my Huddle. I also feel like I have to LIVE the poses… let me explain.
Dove groups her poses into brilliant themed packs – Aerial Assault, Barbie Girl, the creatively labeled Dude series (I – IVVV) – and there’s also a selection of ‘chubby’ couples packs. Naturally, I already own Bad Bish, Drama Queen, Barbie Girl (read: all the diva poses!) but the ones I want desperately are for Geisha, which I won’t let myself commit to it until I have the full geisha regalia to really do the poses justice, and Wannabe Pornstars, because once we open that can of worms, who knows where this blog will go?! I’m also eyeing up all the couple poses because they’re all so freaking cool – now I just need to get me a picture buddy with strong arms!
The poses suit any kind of clothing or photography, really, and because they often defy gravity, the fun you can have with angles is endless. Dove also supplies some prop-and-pose sets, which I prefer to sets that place you in the sitting (or leaning…) position.
Individual poses cost between L$25 and L$50 and fatpacks will set you back up to L$400.

Luth Brodie’s Reel Expression animations store was my first port of call as a young avatar (though I didn’t purchase my first AO until I was almost 6 months old… On the diffusion of innovations scale, I’d have to rate myself a laggard. I might even name a group that, when I start one for my friends in, say, 2011). Her Expressions and Funky sets have some of the most recognisable poses in all SL – who hasn’t made little finger horns and posed en mass at parties?
I hadn’t been in her store for some time (in fact I think it’s been since Luth changed the store name to Reel Expressions from Reel Movement) and I can’t remember if all of the current poses and AOs were there all that time ago. Regardless, it did spike my interest again in replenishing my tired Animation Override department.
Like Torrid, Luth’s poses are natural, and there seems to be quite an emphasis on physical gestures, which I <3 (I’m buying the Rawr set just for that bicep grab when I’m next online). Prices vary wildly for individuals as well as fatpacks (depending on props, number of poses, popularity of set, if it’s an AO) but a guide is around L$100 for individual poses and up to L$1600 for fatpacks.
There’s a real hipster awkwardness to Tilly Tokyo’s poses – much like the skinny jean-wearing brethren whose tightness of pants and inherent coolness restrict certain movements, Hiccup poses aren’t meant to flow with grace and beauty. Each is amusingly named (Woo! Yeah, Sun So Bright, Scheming), which makes them easy to remember, and while these poses aren’t the most flattering at times, they are hugely characterful and lots of fun. I find they really suit a style of dress where whimsy is valued over practicality.
So cheaply priced at L$40 for individual poses and L$400 for fat(FAT)packs, Hiccup poses round out my pose inventory nicely.
So…. where do you need to go?

There are a number of other posemakers, who I’ve yet to visit inworld or haven’t included for reasons of sanity (photoshop!) and time. I’m sure there are heaps more – feel free to drop a notecard and landmark on me if I’ve missed you out.

Hey you <33 Last I heard, Luth had actually dropped the prices of all her pose packs and other items, to half, as an experiment (so L$800 for a pack). Excellent for people like you who might want to catch up on getting them all.
OOOH! Thank you, Bride-lady!
I *love* this post. You’re absolutely right – poses are overlooked. In fact I just overlooked mentioning the poses in my last post! The “boob and a sock” comment almost made me spit out my coffee. Great read.
Thanks for the shoutout. I can tell you it is always nice to see a pose given credit for in the blogs. I hope you can visit my store some time…Striking Poses.
This is really cool of you Genevieve. Thank you!! <3
Thank you for such a great write up! It’s nice to see some attention given to the posers out there <3.
Wow thank you! Animators work hard to give avatars poise and personality, thanks so much for your appreciation! <3
Hey Genevieve. I’m also on record as saying we should acknowledge the posers! And I do so at my own blog. You missed out Tuli, who has some nice poses too. My faves currently are Luth and Dove. Myllie Writer at Persona is making strides (literally) and has some lovely hands happening on her latest poses.
I’d like you to search my in-world photography network called AlphA chAnnel and shout me for an invite if you’re interested. Bookmarking your blog now!
